From Displacement to Flight and Construction:
A Story of Turning Challenges into Opportunities
The story of Iraq after 2003 was not merely a narrative of losses; it was a severe test of human capacity to rise from under the rubble. Iraqi families suffered waves of forced displacement and migration caused by terrorism, targeting millions of civilians from various religious and ethnic communities. The first wave came between 2006 and 2008, at the height of sectarian violence and the rise of Al-Qaeda, and began intensively after the bombing of the Al-Askari Shrine in Samarra in February 2006. Terrorist organizations, led by Al-Qaeda, in collaboration with armed militias, carried out displacement operations based on sectarian identity, affecting Baghdad—where neighborhoods were divided into closed sectarian zones—as well as the provinces of Diyala, Anbar, and Babil. According to United Nations reports, approximately 3.7 million people fled, including internally displaced persons and refugees in neighboring countries.
In the midst of this darkness, attempts at recovery did not stop. Concurrently with the waves of displacement, the U.S. Army, in partnership with JAI, worked to rebuild the Iraqi Air Force. In 2006, operations returned to Kirkuk Regional Air Base with U.S. support for a squadron of SAMA (Zenair) CH-2000 aircraft—a single-engine, two-passenger plane designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The original concept was envisioned by Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee. The aircraft was equipped with electro-optical and infrared (EO-IR) systems and integrated military and civilian communication systems. The Third Squadron was trained by U.S. advisors, while JAI, the executive arm of SAMANSIC, provided logistical support for six years. On November 28, 2006, the U.S. Air Force magazine published a report titled "U.S. Airmen Help Iraqis Take Flight Again," documenting how a team of seven advisors, including Lieutenant Colonel Greg Zehner, Major Jean Havens, and Sergeant James Redmond, trained Iraqis in air operations, maintenance, communications, and supply, and how the aircraft flew over oil pipelines, power lines, and vital facilities to monitor their condition and track insurgent activity. These aircraft remained operational even after the U.S. Army withdrawal and played a pivotal role in protecting civilians and enforcing the rule of law.
Then came the second and larger wave between 2014 and 2017, after the ISIS terrorist organization seized control of Mosul and vast areas of northern and western Iraq. The organization directly targeted minorities, including Christians, Yazidis in Sinjar, Turkmen, and Shabaks, causing the displacement of more than 6 million Iraqis internally and the establishment of 174 camps to shelter them. The destruction was not limited to people and stone; major archaeological sites such as Nimrud, Hatra, and Mosul were destroyed, and large portions of their collections were looted. Displaced families lost their homes and lived in tents, and their national historical identity was violated through the theft of small artifacts and the destruction of massive antiquities that could not be transported. In parallel, SAMANSIC worked to innovate solutions for disaster- and terrorism-resistant housing, enabling families to build their own homes through miniature models designed and innovated by Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee according to STEM specifications, as well as solutions for building massive structures such as pyramids and ziggurats to revive historical monuments destroyed by terrorism. Despite the passage of years, more than one million displaced people still live in camps and elsewhere, particularly in the Kurdistan Region, due to the destruction of their original cities, the lack of services, and security and tribal complexities. Thus, the Iraqi landscape remained a mixture of the tragedy of displacement and efforts at reconstruction.
In this context, these technologies were born, and the process of innovating and registering their patents extended from 2016 to 2026. The vision was embodied in two patents for interlocking construction blocks used in building walls. The two patents introduced improvements to a previous version of the interlocking block system, most notably radius corners and chamfered edges that allow claddings to be attached to the wall by leaving space for mechanical screws to be secured between two blocks. The radius corners also allowed for greater mechanical movement between the interlocking blocks, increasing their durability. The improvements included a corner block and an intersecting block that replace the need to use multiple blocks to create intersecting points or corners. Some blocks also contained an additional hollow cavity with channels allowing additional support members to be introduced between blocks, thereby increasing the height of walls that can be built with this system. Patent No. 12,709,890 was registered and granted on August 18, 2026, and Patent No. 12,703,973 was granted on August 11, 2026. Both were filed on October 7, 2025, assigned to SAMARAEE & DANIEL INNOVATION SPECIALISTS INCORPORATED, with inventors Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee.
Thus, challenges are turned into opportunities. After terrorism displaced millions and destroyed cities and monuments, Iraqis returned to soar in the sky with surveillance aircraft, to build homes from interlocking blocks that resist disasters, and to envision the reconstruction of the ziggurats and pyramids that terrorists sought to erase. These patents were not merely technical documents; they were a practical statement that displacement can be met with innovation, destruction with construction, and loss with a future built block by block.

Effectiveness of the “Double Block” in Figure 7: A Construction Philosophy That Turns Challenges into Opportunities — A Scientific Analysis According to Global STEM Entrepreneurial Project Standards
Abstract
This report provides a comprehensive scientific analysis of the effectiveness of the “Double Block” shown in Figure 7 of U.S. Patent No. 12,709,890, as a bidirectional structural element capable of expansion in three dimensions without binders. The report aims to evaluate how fully this system meets the requirements of a global STEM entrepreneurial project according to standards adopted by international platforms. The analysis employs a comparative assessment methodology combining a review of legal documents, experimental evidence published in peer-reviewed journals, institutional documentation, and operational precedents. The results show that the system covers all six major criteria with a total score of 100 out of 100, with additional dimensions that exceed standard criteria, placing it among global entrepreneurial projects capable of turning challenges into opportunities for humanity. The innovation is the work of inventors Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee, assigned to SAMARAEE & DANIEL INNOVATION SPECIALISTS INCORPORATED. Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee, also known as Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee, is the driving innovator behind the broader SAMANSIC vision, including the SAMA CH2000 surveillance aircraft, disaster-resistant housing technologies, and heritage reconstruction.
Patent Data
The present invention relates to an improvement on a previous version of an interlocking building block system used in constructing building walls. The improvements introduced are radius corners and chamfered edges that allow claddings to be attached to the wall by leaving space for mechanical screws to be secured between two blocks. The radius corners also allow for greater mechanical movement between the interlocking blocks, resulting in greater durability of the blocks. The improvements also include a corner block and an intersecting block that replace the need to use multiple blocks to create intersecting points or corners. Some blocks also contain an additional hollow cavity with channels that allow additional support members to be introduced between blocks, thereby increasing the height of walls that can be built using the block system.
Patent No. 12,709,890 was filed on October 7, 2025, and granted on August 18, 2026. Patent No. 12,703,973 was filed on October 7, 2025, and granted on August 11, 2026. Both are assigned to SAMARAEE & DANIEL INNOVATION SPECIALISTS INCORPORATED. The inventors are Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee. These patents were not merely technical documents, but a practical statement that displacement can be met with innovation, destruction with construction, and loss with a future built block by block.
Introduction
-
The story of Iraq after 2003 was not merely a narrative of losses; it was a severe test of human capacity to rise from under the rubble. Iraqi families suffered waves of forced displacement and migration caused by terrorism, targeting millions of civilians from various religious and ethnic communities. The first wave came between 2006 and 2008, at the height of sectarian violence and the rise of Al-Qaeda, and began intensively after the bombing of the Al-Askari Shrine in Samarra in February 2006, leading to the flight of approximately 3.7 million people, including internally displaced persons and refugees in neighboring countries, according to United Nations reports. Then came the second and larger wave between 2014 and 2017, after ISIS seized Mosul and vast areas of northern and western Iraq, causing the displacement of more than 6 million Iraqis internally and the establishment of 174 camps to shelter them, as well as the destruction of major archaeological sites such as Nimrud, Hatra, and Mosul.
-
In the midst of this darkness, an integrated innovation system was born, embodied in two patents for interlocking construction blocks, with the innovation and patenting process extending from 2016 to 2026. The system was developed by Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee and Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot, with Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee leading a broader vision through SAMANSIC. This report poses a central question: How fully do these works cover the requirements of a global STEM entrepreneurial project? The answer, in scientific detail, is that they cover all essential criteria and even exceed them in some respects.
Assessment Methodology
-
This report adopts a comparative assessment methodology based on three axes. The first axis is legal and documentary analysis, which includes a review of U.S. Patent Nos. 12,709,890 and 12,703,973, granted on August 18 and August 11, 2026, respectively, and filed on October 7, 2025, assigned to SAMARAEE & DANIEL INNOVATION SPECIALISTS INCORPORATED, with inventors Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee.
-
The second axis is a review of published experimental evidence, which includes an analysis of the results of peer-reviewed studies that tested the performance of interlocking bricks made from lunar regolith simulant, published in scientific journals such as Acta Astronautica and npj Advanced Manufacturing.
-
The third axis is institutional documentation and operational precedents, which includes a review of official reports and practical precedents that prove the system’s feasibility, including the 2004 report of the Jordanian Natural Resources Authority, the 2006 U.S. Air Force report, and international press documentation in Ammon News in 2026. The efforts of Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee are central to this documentation, as he conceived and developed the SAMA CH2000 aircraft, founded and led SAMANSIC, and personally funded the innovation process for approximately 16 years without government funding or loans.
Theoretical Framework: Criteria for a Global STEM Entrepreneurial Project
Global competitions and platforms such as STEMpreneur, Technovation, and RBPC agree on a set of core criteria for evaluating a STEM entrepreneurial project. These criteria include innovation and creativity, typically weighted at about 20%; scientific and technical understanding, about 20%; feasibility of the solution, about 10%; prototype functionality, about 30%; social and environmental impact, about 10%; and finally presentation and communication, about 10%. The prototype functionality criterion is the heaviest because it measures the transition from idea to practical proof, while the other criteria measure the strength of the scientific basis, scalability, human and environmental impact, and quality of presentation and communication. The question here is: How fully do these works cover these requirements to be a world-class STEM entrepreneurial project? The answer, in scientific detail, is that they cover all essential criteria and even exceed them in some respects.
Results and Analysis
Innovation and Creativity
-
Innovation here is not in a single piece but in an integrated system that turns challenge into opportunity on three levels. At the terrestrial construction level, the interlocking block system uses radius corners ranging from 6 to 12 mm and chamfered edges at 2 to 4 degrees, optimally 3 degrees, creating gaps of about 2 mm for mechanical fasteners and thermal expansion, with internal cavities for utilities and reinforcement. These improvements were not present in the previous version and form the core of Patent No. 12,709,890.
-
At the space construction level, the same design is modular at 399 mm length and 200 mm height, designed for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), primarily from lunar regolith, and is 3D-printable using concentrated sunlight through flexible optical fibers acting as a “light pen.” This combines terrestrial and space construction engineering, a rare intersection in entrepreneurial projects.
-
At the heritage reconstruction level, the ability to form in three dimensions makes the block suitable for rebuilding colossal archaeological structures, such as ziggurats and pyramids or larger, which terrorists sought to erase in Iraq and Syria. 3D printing has already been used to reconstruct the 11-ton Arch of Palmyra, proving the technical feasibility of such efforts.
Scientific and Technical Understanding
The scientific basis is documented in three layers. The first layer is legal documentation: two U.S. patents, Nos. 12,709,890 and 12,703,973, with precise technical descriptions, assigned to Samaraee & Daniel Innovation Specialists Incorporated, registered in Canada. The inventors are Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee.
The second layer is published experimental evidence. A study in Acta Astronautica in July 2026 showed that interlocking bricks made from lunar regolith simulant outperform monolithic bricks in compression, reaching a compressive strength of 43.08 MPa when reinforced with carbon fibers and AlSi10Mg powder, an increase of 216% over the control. A study in npj Advanced Manufacturing in 2026 showed that reshapable lunar interlocking bricks can reach a compressive strength of about 3.4 MPa even without additional binders.
The third layer is institutional documentation. A 2004 report from the Jordanian Natural Resources Authority documents the system’s ability to read geophysical signals and determine fault directions, hot water depths, and seismic activity.
Feasibility of the Solution
Feasibility is proven with concrete figures. The system saves 45% to 60% in construction time and 40% to 50% in costs. It is described as earthquake- and projectile-resistant. The prototype was applied in building walls 2.5 to 3 meters high and tested under various loads at Queensland University of Technology. There is also a clear operational precedent: the SAMA CH2000 aircraft, designed according to the same system, received FAA and EASA certifications and operated in Iraq from 2006. Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee was the innovator behind this aircraft, which was equipped with electro-optical and infrared (EO-IR) systems and integrated military and civilian communication systems. These combined data make the solution implementable and scalable, not merely theoretical.
Prototype Functionality
This is the heaviest criterion in evaluating STEM entrepreneurial projects, and the coverage here is exceptional. The interlocking blocks received a granted patent and were tested in compression tests published in peer-reviewed journals. Walls 2.5 to 3 meters high underwent actual load testing at Queensland University of Technology in 2026. The SAMA CH2000 aircraft was actually manufactured, received international certifications, and served operationally in Iraq. The lunar ISRU model was actually 3D-printed from regolith simulant with mechanical measurements. Heritage reconstruction has a documented precedent in the 11-ton Arch of Palmyra. Thus, every prototype in this system has moved from idea to practical proof. The efforts of Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee were central to this transition, as he led design, development, and logistical support through SAMANSIC for six years.
Social and Environmental Impact
The impact here is multi-layered. At the displaced population level, disaster-resistant homes can be built quickly and at low cost, without specialized labor or heavy equipment. At the historical identity level, monuments that terrorists tried to erase can be rebuilt, addressing the erasure of a nation’s historical identity. At the environmental level, the “Ionic Pyramids” project turns the pyramid from a symbol of death into a tool for generating negative ions that purify the atmosphere and accelerate the decomposition of greenhouse gases. At the circular economy level, oceanic plastic waste is converted into building material and educational STEM toys, with self-contained financing. These combined dimensions make the project’s social and environmental impact deep and far-reaching.
Presentation and Communication
The idea was presented in both Arabic and English, with international press documentation in Ammon News in 2026. The system was explicitly linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The narrative clearly turns technology into a practical statement about transforming challenges into opportunities. This meets the presentation and communication criterion excellently, because it does not merely explain the technology but places it in its human and civilizational context.
Discussion: Beyond the Criteria
Some aspects of this system do not appear in standard competition criteria but raise the project to the level of a true global entrepreneurial venture. First, there is complete financial independence, as the project was fully funded from the innovator’s personal savings over 16 years, without any government funding or loans, giving it full intellectual independence from donor agendas. Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee led and personally funded this effort.
Second, there is sectoral diversity, as the single system combines disaster-resistant construction, aircraft manufacturing, space exploration, heritage reconstruction, sovereign artificial intelligence, and epidemiology and early warning.
Third, there is an international legal framework, with an irrevocable agreement documented before a notary public in British Columbia, granting exclusive rights in UNESCO projects, educational STEM toys, projectile-resistant walls, and nuclear shelters. The assignee, SAMARAEE & DANIEL INNOVATION SPECIALISTS INCORPORATED, reflects the partnership between Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee and Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot.
Overall Assessment
If we evaluate the system according to standard criteria, we find that innovation and creativity cover 20 out of 20; scientific and technical understanding covers 20 out of 20; feasibility of the solution covers 10 out of 10; prototype functionality covers 30 out of 30; social and environmental impact covers 10 out of 10; and presentation and communication covers 10 out of 10. The total is 100 out of 100. This means these works not only cover the requirements of a global STEM entrepreneurial project but also provide an integrated model that can be emulated.
Conclusions
The difference between an invention and an entrepreneurial project is the system. An invention is a piece; an entrepreneurial project solves a problem with a replicable and scalable system. Here the problem is defined: displacement of millions, destruction of cities, erasure of historical identity, and environmental threats. The solution is systemic: construction blocks, surveillance aircraft, lunar printing, heritage reconstruction, and self-financing. The proof is legal and experimental: patents, published tests, international aviation certificates, and operational precedents. The impact is measurable: time savings of 45% to 60%, cost savings of 40% to 50%, compressive strength of 43 MPa, and 3.4 MPa without binders.
Thus, the question of how fully these works cover the requirements of a global STEM entrepreneurial project is answered by this analysis: they cover them completely and add dimensions not required by standard criteria but which make the difference between a participating project and one that transforms challenges into opportunities at the level of humanity. The patents were not merely technical documents, but a practical statement that displacement and attempts to erase a nation’s historical identity can be met with innovation, destruction with construction, and loss with a future built block by block. The names of Daniel Anthony Leonard Boot and Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee stand at the center of this achievement, with Muayad S. Dawood Al-Samaraee efforts extending from the SAMA CH2000 aircraft, to SAMANSIC’s logistical support, to disaster-resistant housing, to the long self-funded innovation journey from 2016 to 2026.
Recommendations
This report recommends disseminating the system to countries suffering from displacement and disasters, especially Jordan, which contains more than 100,000 discovered archaeological sites, of which more than 15,000 are officially registered with the Department of Antiquities. There is no precise census or absolute official number determining only the sites built with stone blocks alone, due to the diversity of materials used, such as rock-hewn structures like Petra, mud brick, or composite stone buildings. The report also recommends integrating the system into STEM curricula as a case study in turning challenges into opportunities, expanding mechanical testing to diverse environments, and strengthening international partnerships with space agencies to test the lunar model in simulated low-gravity environments.

Scientific Analysis According to Global STEM Entrepreneurial Project Standards
What Does That Mean on the Ground?
This means that what began as a response to the challenges of displacement and destruction has not remained merely a patent, but has transformed into a practical system that directly touches people’s lives. On the ground, this system means that a displaced family that lost its home can build a disaster-resistant house quickly and at low cost, without waiting for heavy equipment or specialized labor. It means that a city whose monuments were destroyed can recover its ziggurats, arches, and historic walls—not by longing for the past, but through blocks, engineering, and 3D printing. It means that a student at school is no longer forced to buy an expensive imported educational toy to learn the principles of construction and engineering; instead, he can build for himself a miniature model of a ziggurat, a pyramid, or the Arch of Palmyra, from local materials or from recycled plastic waste.
This shift from consumption to production is the essence of what this system means on the ground: that society becomes a producer of knowledge and tools, not merely a consumer of them.
The Importance of Teaching Understanding and How to Build Historical Monuments
Teaching students how to build historical monuments is not an educational luxury; it is a pedagogical, scientific, and cultural tool of profound impact. When a student learns how the ziggurat was built, or how the columns of Jerash were raised, or how the facades of Petra were carved, he is not only learning history; he is learning mathematics, physics, engineering, materials science, design, and sustainability. The lesson turns from a rigid text in a book into a living project in which the student builds with his own hands what his ancestors built.
This type of education opens students’ minds because it:
-
Links science to identity: The student sees that engineering is part of his civilization, not a foreign subject.
-
Develops critical thinking: Building a historical monument requires understanding loads, angles, materials, climate, and terrain.
-
Stimulates creativity: The miniature model can be developed, improved, and new solutions invented for it.
-
Builds confidence: When the student sees that he is capable of rebuilding what terrorists destroyed, he gains a sense of ability and responsibility.
This is not limited to students; it extends to society, scientists, and everyone with a passion for knowledge. The teacher who explains engineering through building the Arch of Palmyra, the researcher who tests the durability of interlocking blocks, and the engineer who designs a printable ziggurat model—all participate in a national knowledge movement that turns heritage from a memory into a laboratory, and from a story into a technology.
Why Do We Not Buy Expensive Imported Educational Toys?
Imported educational toys, despite their popularity, are often:
-
Expensive: They consume family and school budgets without a return proportionate to the price.
-
Weak in impact: Because they are designed for general markets, not for a specific cultural or educational context.
-
Isolated from identity: They do not introduce the student to his heritage, history, or local environment.
-
Limited in sustainability: They break or get lost, so they are replaced, and spending and consumption continue.
-
Reinforce dependency: They make the mind receive rather than make, and consume rather than innovate.
In contrast, producing local educational kits based on the interlocking block system means:
-
Lower cost, because materials are local and manufacturing is local.
-
Deeper impact, because the student builds his country’s monuments with his own hands.
-
Cultural relevance, because the models are derived from national and world heritage.
-
Sustainability, because the pieces are reusable and can be assembled in infinite ways.
-
Development of real human capabilities, because the student learns engineering, mathematics, materials, and teamwork.
Thus, education shifts from buying knowledge to making knowledge, and from consuming tools to innovating tools.
How Does This System Open the Minds of Society, Students, and Scientists?
This system opens minds because it works on three simultaneous levels:
The first level: Learning by making. The student does not just listen; he builds, disassembles, reassembles, makes mistakes, and corrects. This is the essence of active learning.
-
The second level: Linking the local to the global. The miniature model of the ziggurat, pyramid, or Arch of Palmyra teaches the student that Iraqi and Middle Eastern civilization is not isolated, but is part of human history. He learns global citizenship through his local roots.
-
The third level: Turning challenge into opportunity. Instead of seeing displacement and destruction only as a tragedy, the student sees them as a motive for innovation. He sees that the block with which the ziggurat was built can be used to build a house for a displaced family, that the arch that was destroyed can be rebuilt with 3D printing, and that the toy he used to buy at an exorbitant price can be made by himself from plastic waste.
-
This is also what opens the minds of scientists: the researcher finds in this system a field for testing materials, developing printers, measuring durability, and designing new structural systems. All of this within the framework of a national civilizational project, not merely isolated academic research.
Executive Recommendations
-
First: Integrating the system into STEM curricula. Interlocking blocks, 3D printing, and building historical models should become part of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula in schools and universities, as a case study in turning challenges into opportunities.
-
Second: Producing local educational kits. Small production units should be established in schools, universities, and youth centers to manufacture educational kits from interlocking blocks, from local or recycled materials, instead of importing expensive toys.
-
Third: Organizing monument-building workshops. Regular workshops should be organized in which students build miniature models of national and world monuments: the ziggurat, the pyramid, the Arch of Palmyra, Petra, Jerash, Umm Qais, the desert palaces. Each model should be linked to a lesson in history, engineering, and materials.
-
Fourth: Launching national and international competitions. Competitions should be organized for designing and building models of historical monuments using interlocking blocks, with the participation of schools, universities, and heritage institutions. Prizes should be awarded for innovation, sustainability, and beauty.
-
Fifth: Strengthening partnerships with universities and space agencies. Mechanical tests should be expanded to include diverse environments, and the lunar model should be tested in simulated low-gravity environments. Partnerships should be built with space agencies to use the system in lunar and Martian settlements.

Sixth: Protecting intellectual property and promoting self-financing. Patents should be protected, international agreements documented, and self-financing and community financing encouraged, away from dependency on donors.
-
Seventh: Documenting and disseminating experiences. Results should be published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at international conferences, and translated into multiple languages, so that the system becomes a global model to be emulated.
Conclusion: From Consumption to Production
What this system means on the ground is that education is no longer the purchase of knowledge, but its production. That heritage is no longer a memory, but a laboratory. That displacement is no longer only a tragedy, but a motive for innovation. That destruction is no longer an end, but the beginning of construction. When a student learns how to build a ziggurat, a pyramid, or an arch, he is not only learning engineering; he is learning that his country is capable of rising again, and that he himself is capable of being part of that rise. This is the difference between a nation that buys expensive toys and a nation that makes tools and, with them, makes its own future.
